WAR FILM

PEARL HARBOR(2001)
by: Maricar Dizon

"Victory belongs to those who believe"

Certainly, Pearl Harbor is no ordinary war film. Directed by a talented director Michael Bay and with actors such as Ben Affleck, Josh Hartnett and Kate Beckinsale, the movie was a hit not only on paperview but also to the heart of millions who watched it.

Set during the time of World War II, the story tackled not only the bombing of Pearl Harbor but also the life of two pilot frieds(Affleck & Hartnett) who both fell in love with a nurse(Beckinsale). The supporting character's individual fears were also given ample importance.

The way it was directed made it more moving. The effects made the viewers part of the war. The shots emphasized the pain, frustrations, fear, love and hope of all the characters. The set implyed the anguish of staying alive amidst the thousands of people yelling to be saved, the frustration to help but can do nothing and the pain of watching the most special person for them stop breathing. Yet the film also showed bravery inspite of the unsure future and a hope for a brighter tomorrow.

In the end, a salute must be given to Danny(Affleck) and Raffe(Hartnett) who inspite of loving the same girl, taught the value of friendship, teamwork, bravery and the thought that there's nothing stronger than a heart of a volunteer.
